Seismic Interpretation Advisor (IBM Research)
UX Design / UX Research / Methodology
This prototype is an Artificial Intelligence-based advisor to assist in seismic interpretation related to Oil and Gas exploration. It sought to automate the analysis of technical documents, including notes from research scientists, and provide advice on how to interpret subsurface geology through seismic imaging.

It integrates relevant information from multiple sources, including seismic images, academic articles, notes and reports. Using AI, it offers suggestions with supporting evidence, with information being built up over time, enabling knowledge transfer and retention.
Low-fidelity prototypes to validate and gain stakeholder insights.
Design process
I worked as a UX Designer & Researcher (as a Ph.D. level trainee) in the Visual Analytics & Insights group responsible for this project at IBM Research, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The multidisciplinary team included geophysicists, data scientists, developers, managers and designers. My work consisted of:

  • UX research: Conducting research and applying design methods such as Contextual Interviews, Personas, Card Sorting, and Usability Testing ("Wizard of Oz" testing).
  • UI design: The project involved continuous prototyping and iterations with end users. I was responsible for designing the UI for all sections and journeys of the system, and creating and maintaining standardised design components and style guidelines using Sketch.
  • Front-end implementation done with HTML, CSS and CSS preprocessors (Sass / Less) in an Angular-based system.
